Dr. Gaba was born in Naujan, Or Mindoro, Philippines on December 11, 1925, the son of the late Atty. Manuel S. Gaba and Paciencia Sanchez Gaba. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Celso, Cipriano, Rizal and two sisters, Imelda and Elena.
Dr. Gaba received his M.D. from Manila Central University, Philippines. His internship was in Jamaica Hospital, Long Island, NY. Residencies in Internal Medicine were in White Plains Hospital, NY, Grasslands Hospital, NY and Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, MD. He worked for several years as an Emergency Room Physician in Syracuse, NY and at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, NY. For over 20 years he worked at Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital, retiring in 1994, but continuing part-time until 2004.
Survivors include his wife, Joanne Ducret Gaba to whom he was married November 14, 1959; two sons, Jeffrey Nicholas Ducret Gaba (fiancée Stephanie Dooley), Marietta, GA, and Christopher Ducret Baylis-Gaba (Robert) Fort Lauderdale, FL; and one daughter, Marisa Ducret Gaba Ortega (Carlos), Pompano Beach, FL; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Nicholas Gaba, Jr., Cleveland, OH, Margaret Ansley Gaba, Marietta, GA, Samantha and Gabriel Ortega, both of Pompano Beach, and Christian and Cooper Baylis-Gaba, both of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and four sisters, Nora Trajano, Philippines, Patricia Reyes (Kelly), Philippines, Mila de Mesa, Vancouver, B.C. and Mutya Leyco (Nester), CA. Also survived by mother-in-law Marian Ducret, Rome, and brother-in-law David Ducret (Ronda) ME and many nieces and nephews (22).
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 10:30 AM Friday, August 26, 2011, with Father Patrick Kingery and Deacon Stuart Neslin officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.
The family will receive friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Thursday, August 25, 2011 from 6-8 PM. A private Rosary will be held at 5:15 PM for family and close friends at Daniels.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 911 N. Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161, specifically for the Caring Ministry and/or 4th Degree Knights of Columbus charities or to Heyman Hospice Care, P.O. Box 163, Rome, GA 30162-0163.
