Ladye Jane Cox Payne, age 82, of Rome, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2021. Jane was a lifelong Georgian, born on May 29, 1939, in Atlanta, and lived in Brunswick, Albany, Kennesaw, and Rome as a child. She was a proud graduate of Rome High School and Tift College.
As a passionate educator in the Rome City School system, Jane devoted her life’s work to children, having taught social studies, among other subjects, primarily at West End Elementary for over 35 years. She and her husband, Bobby, were active members of the Coosa Country Club, and Jane was very active in her church and in her community. She was a former Chairman of the Session at both Westminster Presbyterian and Covenant Presbyterian, a former Chairman of the Floyd County Board of Health, a past President of the Rome Federated Garden Clubs, a past Member of the Floyd-Rome Retired Educators Association, a past Member of the Junior Service League of Rome, and a former Jaycette.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Bobby Gene Payne; parents Cicero Albert Cox and June Leonard Cox; and brothers John Albert Cox, Sr. and Charles Michael “Mickey” Cox.
She is survived by nephew, John Cox, Jr. (wife Shea) and great nephew Jack of Carrollton, Ga; nephew Jason Cox (wife Abby) and great nieces Sarah Frances and Sallie of Atlanta, Ga; and niece Muguet Cox Kebel (husband Matt) and great nieces Annabelle and Lily of Jersey City, NJ; along with several cousins.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery in Cedartown, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Rome-Floyd Humane Society, 518 Broad St. Rome, Ga 30161.
