He was a loving husband, model father, caring grandfather, civic volunteer and loyal servant of the Lord.
Mr. Bishop was born December 15, 1931 in Charlottesville, Virginia, son of the late James, Sr. and Emma Bishop. He was a distinguished military cadet and Business Administration graduate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1955. While serving in the Air Force in Charleston, South Carolina, he met and married Lucille Floyd, his wife of 55 years. In 1958 he began his 33 year career with Georgia Power Company in Atlanta, Georgia. After holding several positions with the company he was transferred to Rome, Georgia in 1969 where he held the position of Rome Division Accounting Manager until his retirement in 1991.
Mr. Bishop volunteered his time extensively. In 1990, he served as President of the Board of Trustees for the United Way of Rome and Floyd County. He was a longtime member of the Exchange Club of Rome, serving in various capacities including President in 1978-1979 and was honored as Exchangite of the Year in 1993. Jim was particularly proud of being a part of the founding Board and former President for the Exchange Club Family Resource Center which is involved in efforts to help prevent child abuse and neglect in Rome and Floyd County. He was an active member of the Rome First United Methodist Church and The Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class for 44 years. He was also a former member of the Nine O’clock Cotillion Club.
He is survived by his wife Cile, his sister Jean and her husband Frank Garrett, his son James, III and his wife Thay, his son Ed and his wife Liz, his daughter Gigi and her husband Guy Binion, his grandchildren, Elise and Emily Braden, AJ and Michael Bishop, Kelley Gibson, Lindsey and Allison Binion and great grandchild, Kayla Gibson.
The family received friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home, 901 E.Second Avenue on March 28th from 6:00 pm until 8 pm.
A celebration of life service was held Friday, March 29th, 2013, at 11:00am at the Rome First United Methodist Church, 202 E. Third Avenue in Rome, Georgia, with Rev. Elaine Puckett, Rev. Chris Barbieri and Rev. Larry Caywood officiating.
