Ruth was born on September 22, 1925, to Howard and Irene Ellis of Rome. After graduating from Model High School in 1942 she was employed by Salmon Groceries.
Ruth met Fred Day, also employed by Salmon Groceries (later to become Piggly Wiggly). Fred joined the US Army in 1942, stationed in Europe. After four years as a war sweetheart, they married in April 1946. Ruth and Fred went on to have four children, Gwen, Mike, Jimmy, and Bruce.
When Ruth had Gwen, she decided to dedicate her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother. Recently when hospitalized, she was asked to list her hobbies. Her loving response was, “I had no hobbies, I had four children!” Ruth was an extraordinary cook; cakes were her specialty. She never missed preparing hot breakfasts before school, serving as room mother throughout Gwen’s, Mike’s, Jimmy’s, and Bruce’s elementary school years. She continued throughout her life to support the love of her life, Fred, and to provide protection, nourishment and hugs to Gwen, Mike, Jimmy, and Bruce. We will miss her greatly.
When Ruth wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she was active in her churches, West Rome Baptist, then returning to her childhood church, Spring Creek Baptist. Among other activities, she enjoyed participating as a Pink Lady at Floyd Hospital and playing Bridge with friends.
Once the children became independent, Ruth was employed by Maxwell Furniture Company in sales, retiring after 15 years.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Day in 1999; parents, Howard and Irene Ellis; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Martha (John) Burkhalter and Francis (Robert) Lloyd, a brother and sister-in-law, James (Ann) Ellis, Jr.
She is survived by her children Gwen (Greg) Brandon, Talking Rock, GA.; Michael (Candy), Day, Ellijay, GA; Jimmy Day (Jeff Cordell), Calhoun, GA; and Bruce Day, Elberta, AL. Ruth also has a surviving sister, Jo Stallings, Kennesaw, GA who recently lost her husband Charles. She is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
The family requests that all flowers and notes are sent to Daniel's Funeral Home, 901 E 2nd Ave SW, Rome, GA 300161-3301. Visitation will be held at 1-2 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 2pm on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at Daniel's Funeral Home.
