She was married to her beloved husband David for 60 years, had 5 children and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Nellie Douthit and her husband of 60 years, David Birmingham.
Bessie is survived by her five children: JoAnn Johnson of Wichita, KS, David Birmingham, Jr. of Wichita, KS, Don Birmingham (Stephanie) of Wichita, KS, Donna Ragland (Chris) of Rogers, Ar and Rebecca Bough (Rick) of Bentonville, Ar. In the 1970’s, Bessie embarked on a fulfilling career with Avon, where her entrepreneurial spirit flourished and she earned many rewards over the years. While raising her young children she exemplified resilience and determination, delivering phonebooks and product samples door to door and various jobs that allowed her to be with her children when they returned home from school.
Bessie’s creativity knew no bounds, as evidenced by her passion for cake decorating. She was also involved in her children's school activities and for many years she would create a haunted house for school fundraisers.
Later in life, Bessie continued to give back to her community through volunteer work at Women's Shelter thrift stores and the Salvation Army thrift store. Her selflessness and compassion touched the lives of many, embodying the true spirit of generosity.
Bessie's infectious humor brought joy to all who knew her. Quick-witted and always ready with a joke, she had a knack for brightening any room. When asked “How are you feeling?”, she would humorously reply, "With my fingers”. If you asked her “How did you sleep last night?” She would always answer, "With my eyes closed."
An avid animal lover, Bessie found joy in the company of pets and cherished moments spent with children and babies, whom she adored.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 26th at Rollins Funeral Home from 10:00-11:00 am. Funeral service immediately to follow at 11:00 am, and interment will be at Fayetteville National Cemetery at 1:30pm.
