Sophocles (Van) Katehakis, age 89, entered into rest on Thursday, April 26, 2018. Born in Greece on the island of Crete in 1928. He was a survivor of the occupation of WWII, and the communist revolution. He joined the Merchant Marines, and sailed for the United States in 1955, ending up in Miami, FL.
Van settled in Melbourne in 1961, and became a proud naturalized citizen of the United States. He was one of the founding fathers of St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church, and longtime member of AHEPA, a Greek men's organization. He was a member of the home builders association. Van was a founder of K&Y Carpet One with co-owner, George Roman, and his son, James Katehakis succeeded him in ownership.
Van loved to fish, work in his yard, and play golf. He never missed a breakfast with his buddies at the ROMEO group (Retired Old Men Eating Out)
He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Margie Katehakis; devoted children, Alexandra (Douglas) Evans, James Katehakis, Ronald Giri Jr., Robert Giri, and Anne Marie Giri; loving grandchildren Lindsey, Courtney, Eddie, and Pasha Katehakis, Dalton, and Greyson Giri; and his precious great-granddaughter Aniyah Clemons.
There will be visitation at Florida Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, 4/30/18 from 5-7:00pm. A celebration of life will follow on Tuesday, 5/1/18 at St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church at 12pm, 5965 N Wickham Rd, Melbourne, FL 32940.
