He worked as a Civil Service Aviation Sheet Metalsmith at Patrick Air Force Base for NASA until he experienced a workplace accident in 1969 that forced his early retirement. He led the team that fabricated the early rockets, as well as the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo capsules for the early space program. He most recently was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for his work in the Civil Air Patrol during World War II.
He is predeceased by his wife of 61 years married in Bridgeton, NC February 26, 1947, Helen Maxine Wayne, and his son, Ronald Fred Wayne (Melody).
Leo is lovingly remembered by his son, Steven E. Wayne (Betty Lou), his daughter, Helen Ann Adams (Archie) of Melbourne FL, and his son, Carl Alan Wayne (Vicky), of Palm Bay, FL, as well as 17 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Leo and Maxine were originally members of First Baptist Church of Melbourne, but felt called to start the first protestant church in Palm Bay. That mission became First Baptist of Palm Bay and now is called Lightpoint Church. He was a member of Central Baptist Church at his passing. He was very athletic up until his work accident and played semi-pro softball and was an avid bowler. Leo was a “hugger” and never missed an opportunity to share his love of people. He was a gracious, generous loving father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend who will be missed by many.
