After retiring from the Coast Guard, he ran the JROTC program at Julia Richmond High School in New York City for 4 years and then started the Program at Myrtle Beach High School in South Carolina, where the JROTC Drill Team won many awards. He also coached the Myrtle Beach High School Seahawks Girls Varsity Fast-Pitch Softball team.
James was an avid sportsman, lifelong Gator’s fan, and firm believer in the strength of family and community. As his 5 children grew, he was heavily involved in their lives through sports and community activities. He assisted with Boy Scouts of America in Juneau, Alaska, and Wilmington, NC and then was Scout Master of the Governors Island NYC chapter. He coached, referred and umpired many games while also chaperoning activities and trips for tournaments and learning experiences. His love of children and desire to help them achieve their highest potential continued to expand and grow throughout his life and led to his 2nd career of 17 years teaching JROTC in the NYC and Myrtle Beach School systems. He was a loving and kind man who was admired and respected by all who met him.
