SHELBY JEAN MacFARLANE, age 77, of Rochester Hills, died December 11, 2018. Shelby was born on April 5, 1941 in Union Star, KY, to James and Eula (Cashman) Turnbull. She graduated from Southeastern High School in 1959 and earned her Bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University in 1963. Shelby was a teacher in Warren Consolidated Schools from 1964 to 1970, when she decided to stay home and raise her family. In 1986 she returned to a teaching career at Macomb Christian School until 1993 when she joined the faculty at Oakland Christian School. Shelby taught High School at Oakland Christian until her retirement in 2006. While an educator at Oakland Christian, she authored a High School Text Book. She was a longtime member of Woodside Bible Church, where she was a greeter, and had previously taught Sunday School and assisted in the Nursery. Shelby was formerly a member of the First Baptist Church of Rochester where she was active in AWANA. She also loved to travel, but most enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren whom she would often join on the monkey bars. In 1964 Shelby married Douglas R. MacFarlane and enjoyed 54 wonderful years of marriage. In addition to her husband Doug, she is survived by her children Piper (Brian) Schick and Matthew (Mary) MacFarlane; grandchildren Rachel Schick, Samantha Schick, Clara MacFarlane, Charlotte MacFarlane and David MacFarlane. Preceded in death by her parents, brothers Kenneth Turnbull and Cecil Turnbull and a sister, Wanda Holland. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, December 17, 2018 at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 W. University Dr, Rochester. Pastor Vince Messina officiating. Interment to follow at Guardian Angel Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 3 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, from 2 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grace Centers of Hope, 35 E.
