Saul Edward Miller Sr. was born on December 15, 1930, in Memphis, TN to the late Rev. Levi and Mrs. Rutha Mae Ragsdale Miller. He was the 6th of 8 children. At the age of nine, Saul was baptized by his father at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, TN. He attended Hamilton High School in Memphis, TN. He was a standout basketball player and was Captain of the team and named “All Memphis.” He also played in the Band and Orchestra. Saul attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, graduating Summa Cum Laude.
In 1956, Saul met and married the women of his dreams the late Carrie Dell Turner at the New Hope Baptist Church. They were married for 51 years. “He was devoted to her “In sickness and in health, Till death do us part.”
Saul retired from the U.S Air Force as a Chief Master Sargent (E9) the highest rank an enlisted man could achieve. He received four AF Commendation Medals and two Meritorious Service Medals. He was the only enlisted Commander in SAC where he served as Commander 3900 Computer Services Squadron at March Air Force Base. After retirement, Saul worked at Riverside Community Hospital as the IT Director for 25 years.
Saul recorded and played professionally as a tenor saxophonist. He was on stage with Jazz and Blues bands, such as Phineas Newborn Jr., BB King, and Bobby ‘Blue" Bland.
Saul faithfully served at Loveland Church for over 30 years. He served as Deacon Chairman for eleven years and became Deacon Emeritus. He also held such key positions as Elder, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Deacon to the Mothers’ Board. For twenty years, he served monthly Communion to the sick with the Joyful Noise Trio.
Saul loved teaching his children sports and music. His innovative coaching drills and concepts developed throughout the years were the catalyst that produced four children who played Division 1 sports in college. One son played for the Airmen of Note, the prestigious Air Force band for the US President. Two children are Basketball Hall of Famers. One son played baseball in the Major Leagues with the Angels.
Saul passed on August 29, 2022, at the age of 92. He was surrounded by love from his children while in the care of Riverside Community Hospital. He received his call from the Lord with a “Well done my good and faithful servant. Your book of life is closed, and your final destination is now Heaven.”
Saul will forever be remembered by his three sons: Saul Jr, Darrell, Sr., and Reggie, and son-in-law Mike. Two daughters: Cheryl, and Tammy; and daughter-in-law Kelly. Ten grandchildren: Danyell, Darrell Jr, Whitney, Nicole, Cameron, Carolyn, Michael, Ryker, Lennox, and Remi. Two sisters: Mallie Weathers and Joyce Brooks.
