William “Bill” Stewart Hester Sr, 83, of Madison, Mississippi passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Visitation is Saturday, March 16, beginning at 9:30 AM, followed by services at 11:00 AM at Parkway Funeral Home, Ridgeland, MS.
Bill was born December 28, 1940, in Hinds County, MS to William Austin Hester and Ellie King Hester. He graduated from Murrah High School in 1958. He served in the Air Force for almost five years. He received his Bachelors from Ole Miss and his Masters from The University of Southern Mississippi.
Bill met his wife of 54 years, Cherlyn Carpenter while teaching in the Natchez Public Schools. They married on July 12th, 1969, and had two sons, William Stewart Hester, Jr. and Robert King Hester.
Bill was a model train, plane, and boat enthusiast, as well as an avid collector. His interest in these things was not limited to just models, as he enjoyed photographing the real things, as well. While serving in the Air Force at McCord AFB, he soloed and attained his private pilot's license in 1961.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his son Robert. He is survived by his wife Cherlyn, his son Stewart, and his brother David Hester (Jo), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bill’s service will be led by Senior Pastor, Rev. Cary Stockett of Galloway United Methodist Church of Jackson, MS. Pallbearers will be Stewart Hester, David Hester, Julian Watson, Tyler Blalock, Joseph Blalock, and Tom Carpenter.
Memorials may be made to the historic Franklin Presbyterian Church, in care of Julian Watson, 276 Geneva Blvd, Madison, MS 39110.
