She was born September 26, 1930 to the late Maude Norwood Tatum and Albert Simpson Tatum in Grenada, MS and shortly thereafter, moved to Durant, MS. After graduating from Durant High School, she attended the University of Mississippi and then graduated from Holmes Junior College.
In 1952, after a 6-week courtship, Nancy married Carl Herrin of Durant, whom she was devoted to for 63 years until his death in 2015. During their marriage, Carl worked in the automobile industry, which moved them to several cities, including Jackson, MS, Kansas City, MO, San Antonio, TX and New Orleans, LA. In 1968, Carl had the opportunity to move back to Jackson to open Herrin-Gear Chevrolet. They resided in Jackson for the remainders of their lives.
Nancy was a member of many clubs including Meh Lady, One O’Clock and Heirloom Antique Club. She was an avid bridge player, antique collector and traveler. She especially cherished the friendships she and Carl made with their “Lunch Bunch Supper Club” members for over 50 years. Nancy greatly enjoyed her time spent with family and friends in Destin, FL and Palm Desert, CA.
They were longtime members of Northminster Baptist Church.
Nancy and Carl were loyal supporters of Ole Miss and especially loved cheering for the football team. In 2011, they established the Carl and Nancy Herrin Scholarship Endowment at the University of Mississippi, which provides need-based scholarships to ten students annually.
Besides being a devoted wife and mother, Nancy was an especially proud grandmother and great-grandmother. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the lights of her life.
Nancy is survived by her son, Jack T. Herrin (Leigh), daughter, Holley H. Noblitt (Don), three grandchildren, Tatum Goodman (Gray), Scott Noblitt (Carolyn) and Carly Herrin; one step-granddaughter Laine Flannigan (Billy); five great-grandchildren, Herrin Goodman, Wade Goodman, Hart Noblitt, Holden Noblitt and Olivia Noblitt; step-great grandchildren Finn Flannigan and Will Flannigan; and special friend and caretaker, Betty Ann McCollum.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Campbell Cove at St. Catherine’s Village.
Visitation will be held at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland on Thursday, April 22, at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
