It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Braxton Whitfield, 75, announces his unexpected passing on Saturday, March 30, 2019. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard “Richie” Whitfield Jr.; parents, Marvin Whitfield Sr. and Eloise Godwin Whitfield Birdsong; and his brother, Jack Whitfield. Richard is survived by his devoted companion, Diane Whitfield; loyal dog, Skipper; loving sister, Penny DeWeese (Charles); and brother, Marvin Whitfield (Linda). He is survived by several nephews, a niece, great-nieces and great-nephews and beloved friends.
Richard proudly served his country in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War as a Sargent. He was also active in the Tennessee National Guard as a Sargent in the 1/278th Armored Calvary Regiment and was honorably discharged. He was a Mason. He was a welder and a member of the Millwrights Local 654.
He had a heart of gold and enjoyed working with his hands. He enjoyed planting flowers and had a gift for designing beautiful landscapes. Funeral services will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23231. Interment will follow in Ocoee, Tenn.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cure Tay-Sach’s Foundation in his memory.
