Mavis, 89, beloved wife of 71 years to Reverend Wille G. Jones, passed from this life to her next in Christ on Thursday, October 29th, 2020 at her home in Mechanicsville, VA.
Mavis was born on August 14th, 1931 to Johnnie and Elma Weeks in Clinton, NC. After moving to Richmond, VA with her parents and attending high school at John Marshall, where she played basketball. She and her husband Willie wed on September 6th, 1949. Together they raised four children: Jerry, Sandra, Willie, and Robin. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on September 6th, 2020.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Elma, her two brothers, Walter (John), and Mac Weeks, and son-in-law Mike Robertson.
She is survived by her four children, daughter-in-law Cynthia, and son-in-law Jim Smith, nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-child.
For much of their married life, Mavis worked a number of part-time jobs. She worked as a pharmacy technician at River Road Pharmacy and packaged cookies at the FFV cookie factory in Richmond.
But her best and most satisfying responsibility other than raising her four children was being a pastor’s wife. For over 50 years Mavis supported her husband Willie as he pastored several churches. She traveled with him to the distant churches away from Richmond as well as those close to the home, praying for and encouraging him to always preach the Gospel and to provide pastoral care to others, and of course keeping the four children in check on the front pew!
Our family would like to express our greatest gratitude to Tricia Shiflett, Ann Christian, and James Walton from Secours Hospice for their sacrificial care to Mavis and family members, and Chaplain Jeff English for his pastoral care, especially to our Dad, Willie Sr.
