Madge Poole Virgin

Madge Poole Virgin, went to the Lord on April 6, 2014. She was preceded in death by her sister, Judith Poole Warren of Roxboro, N.C. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Don Granville Virgin; as well as her older son, Reese Granville Virgin and wife, Jamie; her only daughter, Laura Virgin Williamson and husband, Hank; and her younger son, Claude Rozier and wife, Marianna. Madge also had the pleasure in her later years of having two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Sarah Madge Poole was born on February 3, 1927 in St. Pauls, N.C., where she and Judy grew up during the Great Depression and WWII. They had limited time with their parents, both of whom died during the girls' childhoods. Madge got her love of music from her mother, Frances Rozier Poole, who was the town piano teacher and she kept her mother's grand piano, which she enjoyed playing as did her children later. She rode with her father, Claude Terrell Poole, M.D. on his rounds as the town doctor, which influenced her to study to be a lab technician at U.N.C.in Greensboro. Her third year, she switched her major to Art. Once she earned her B.F.A., Madge Poole intentionally took a job in Church Hill in Richmond, Va., as an art teacher at East End Junior High School. In her day, Madge was a maverick who wanted to leave that small town in North Carolina. She met Don Virgin, who likewise came to Richmond from out-of-state. They were married within a year on July 2, 1949. Due to her husband's transfers with promotions, their three children were born in different cities in Virginia, but the family returned to Richmond in 1962 where Madge Virgin lived the rest of her life with her husband. Her love of art is seen in her oil paintings that her children possess and display in their homes. In her heyday she played the piano, painted, traveled, gardened and kept an impeccable home. She was a long-time member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church. She shared advice that was wise, thoughtful and true. We love her and we will miss her. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. Graveside services will be private. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, 7000 Park Ave. Flowers are welcome or a donation can be made in her memory to Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church.
