John Fielding Foster Jr.

John Fielding Foster Jr., a beloved husband, father, friend, and who could in his own words “sell ice to an Eskimo”, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, in Richmond, Virginia. Born November 6, 1936, in Covington, Virginia, to John Fielding Foster Sr. and Sarah Louise Forbes Foster, he was 87 years old.

A graduate of Covington High School and Lynchburg College, John dedicated much of his professional life to sales, notably at Virginia Metalcrafters in Waynesboro, Virginia and later by forming his own sales company, Foster and Associates. Prior to his career, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Knox, from where he wrote many letters home to his new bride, Kappy.

John was a devoted family man with a finely-tuned sense of humor, a generous and concerned spirit, and a passion for close, family gatherings. His love for a variety of classic and antique cars was only surpassed by his ability to tell tall tales about them. (He claimed to have once sold a Packard because he advertised it was “believed” to have belonged to Al Capone’s bookkeeper.) After retiring, he actively participated in the Elks Lodge in Staunton, Virginia, even serving as an officer for several terms. 

He is survived by his wife, Katharine “Kappy” Foster; daughters, Kay (David Dabbs) Foster and Elizabeth (Bruce) Money; son, John (Rebekah) Foster III; five grandchildren; and many cousins and friends, near and far.

A memorial service will be held at a future date.
