Elizabeth Reynolds Moore, 97, of Richmond, died peacefully on March 9, 2024, having lived a long and abundant life. She was the daughter of the late Archibald Seabrook Reynolds and Eva May Craven Reynolds. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Robert Patrick Moore, MD. She is survived by her daughter, Ellen M. Walk and her husband, John; son, Robert P. Moore Jr. and his wife, Marilyn; grandchildren, Sarah W. Robbins (Nathan), John R. Walk Jr. (Jen), Robert A. Moore, and Michael P. Moore (Kayla); great-grandchildren, Elizabeth S. Robbins and Abigail C. Robbins; sister Alice R. Todd and brother John A. S. Reynolds; and many nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, blessed with many beloved uncles, aunts, and cousins nearby. She got her first violin at age nine and started playing professionally at age 15. She studied at Juilliard under Edouard Dethier, graduating in 1946. In her early career, she performed with the Mint Museum Ensemble and was Assistant Concertmaster in the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.
An aunt introduced her to Robert Patrick Moore, a young physician from Virginia. They married in 1951. After living in Richmond and Spartanburg, SC, they returned to Richmond in 1957 upon hearing that a new symphony orchestra would be formed. Elizabeth became one of the charter members of the Richmond Symphony, enjoying a distinguished 50-year career in the first violin section from 1957 to 2007. She was concertmaster in the early 1970’s, and she was known for her elegant style and the strong musical leadership she provided to fellow players. Outside the symphony, she frequently organized instrumental groups and often played in beautiful worship services at her church, First Presbyterian.
Elizabeth’s family meant everything to her. They enjoyed annual summer vacation trips to Sullivan’s Island, SC, making happy memories with many members of her extended family. She brought her love of music to her children and grandchildren, performing for each grandchild’s class when they attended elementary school. Most of all, Elizabeth and Bob shared a joyful, loving marriage and set a strong example for their children and grandchildren to follow.
Elizabeth loved her good friends in her bridge club who kept in touch all their lives. She was a member of the DAR and the Tuckahoe Women’s Club. When she moved to Cedarfield in 2014, she enjoyed time with both new and life-long friends.
The family wishes to thank Rosa Piercy and the many caregivers and staff at Cedarfield for their steadfast support and love.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 13th, at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street, Richmond, VA 23226. The family will host a reception at the church immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond Symphony or to First Presbyterian Church.
