Charles Gordon Baggett

Charles Gordon Baggett departed this world February 29th. He is survived by his loving wife of 77 years Jo Wood Baggett; his daughter Gwen Slaven; Son-in-law Sandy Slaven and grandson Logan Harding. Additionally, he is remembered by a host of nieces and nephews, his sister Judy Hart, bothers-in-law Riley Wade, James and Laurence Wood. He lived a full life of joy and heartbreak and is proceeded in death by his sisters, Betty, and Jo Anne as well as his remarkable daughter Andria Baggett. Friends and neighbors remember him for his vitality, humor, and charm. Charlie proudly served his country in the Korean War as a Marine with Howe Company; saw extensive combat and survived the Battle of Bloody Ridge – which he described to his daughters by simply saying “several hundred went up the hill and days later only a handful came back down.” He wrote a book of his experiences titled “ Rite of Passage- The Korean War Through the Lens of a Young US Marine.” Upon completion of service, he attended Hampden-Sydney College, but met the love of his life Jo, married; and completed his studies in Advertising with what is now VCU. He began his career in Advertising with Sears in Richmond; transferred to Travelers Insurance and moved to Houston Texas where both daughters were born. Upon returning to Richmond, his career evolved to a position in the Correspondence Division of what was then United Virginia Bank (now Truist.) He remained with the Bank until he retired and relished many aspects of the opportunities his role offered. Charlie had many interests and committed fully to everything he pursued. He had an unending love of learning, appreciation of beauty and nature; joy in debate and philosophical discussions. For many years he was an active member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon and served on their Session. His love of music led him to participate in the choir -often belting out his favorite hymns. He held the community and friends found there in high esteem. Carlie and Jo are current members of Second Baptist Church, and the family appreciates the thoughts and condolences offered from the community that has brought so much richness to their lives. Community, friendship, and service were highly valued, and we remember the many interests and associations Charlie enjoyed. His love of dance resulted in his and Jo’s membership with the Richmond Gentry where he served as president. “The Skipwith Farms Group” comprised of a collection of exceptional people who gathered often and retained friendships over many decades. Three-Chopt Recreation, which provide the family with an active social outlet over many summers and where he also served as President of the board for a time. He also served as President of the Sleepy Hollow Civic Association where he showed tireless dedication to enhancing and cultivating a neighborhood community. The list of his accomplishments, associations and pathway do not effectively reflect the caliber and breadth of his life. Charlie was authentic in every aspect; loved his country and valued honesty, integrity, and loyalty. These values and strengths were instilled in his children and grandson and leave a lasting legacy for a life well lived. A memorial service will be scheduled in the future. Magnatism laughter.
