Gene graduated from Lubbock High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Gurke DD 783 during the Korean War. He completed two tours of duty, earning numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two battle stars, United Nations Service Medal, China Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Defense Commemorative Medal, Combat Action Medal, and several other honors. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
After his military service, Gene followed in his father's footsteps and became an electrician. However, he soon discovered his true calling in public service, joining the Texas Department of Public Safety as a Highway Patrolman for seven years. Later, he transitioned to the insurance industry, founding the Security Savings Life Insurance Company, where he served as President & CEO.
Upon retirement, Gene moved to the countryside, cherishing time spent raising cattle, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors with his beloved wife, Leta. An avid sports enthusiast, he loved golfing, fishing, playing poker, and cheering for Texas Tech football and the Dallas Cowboys. In recent years, he found joy in supporting the Kansas City Chiefs and following his favorite Red Raider, Patrick Mahomes.
A devoted family man, Gene was a caring father, grandfather, and friend. His sharp wit, sense of humor, and passion for storytelling made him a cherished presence at family gatherings. He was also a devoted Mason, having achieved the 32nd degree in Scottish Rite Masonry and being a member of the KHIVA Shrine Temple. Gene was passionate in his fundraising efforts at the Lubbock Fair each year for the Scottish Rite Hospital.
He is survived by his daughters, B. Gene Schlegel (Roger) and Lisa Killgore (Dan), as well as grandsons Andrew and Jacob Oldham, granddaughter Ashley Oldham, and many cherished friends and admirers. Gene's legacy will endure in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in his honor to the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital or Shiners Hospital for Children. Gene fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the Faith. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
