David James Hunn was born July 06, 1959, in Buffalo, New York and died at home in Plano, Texas, on October 08, 2022. David was 63 years old when he passed, and as many have said upon hearing of his death, he was far too young to be leaving us.
He grew up with a love of learning. David enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together. His fascination with, and attention to, electronics created a life-long career in radio and TV broadcasting.
At 17 years old, he began his media vocation as a Systems Engineer at radio station WBEN AM / FM, in Buffalo, New York.
In 1985, David joined radio station KZEW / KRQX in Dallas, Texas, as Assistant Chief Engineer. He made the switch from radio to broadcast television when he joined WFAA-TV in 1987. David continued his professional calling at WFAA-TV, as a well-respected engineer, until 2016. He loved his job and the people he worked with and would have continued his career, had he not had the misfortune of a terrible motorcycle accident. That simple late-night decision changed the direction of his life, until his death in 2022. David also had a rare genetic disorder called Fabry disease. It causes chronic pain and can affect all major organs.
David’s favorite food was a tasty hamburger, or any hamburger for that matter. He was also a huge fan of classic rock music, Star Trek, M.A.S.H. (who wasn’t?), scuba diving, two-way radios, spending time at the shooting range, and trucks… BIG trucks.
And speaking of big trucks, David was able to realize one of his childhood dreams by becoming a Class A Commercial Driver that drove 40-foot semis on short haul deliveries for a friend who owned a trucking company in Buffalo. The bigger the truck, the better.
Some might say that he was a bit of a pack-rat, but David’s most prized possession was the love of his family and friends. He was a kind and generous soul. A man who was strong in the face of doubt and pain, a man who always wanted to know how you were doing. A man who smiled with his eyes and laughed at silly jokes. He was patient, shy and charming. He was brilliant and humble. He had strong opinions and would share them, but in a respectful way. He was challenged physically and mentally beyond what anyone should have to endure, and yet, maintained a positive outlook and hope for a brighter time to come.
He believed in God and always welcomed a prayer. He said “I could not get through this without God”, and quietly offered thanks for His presence.
David wasn’t a saint by any means. He could be difficult, mischievous and quite stubborn – as we all can be! But he always made people better human beings, just by knowing him.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Parker and Lois Hunn and his dear friend, Carrie Strange. David will be buried next to Carrie in Abilene, Texas.
He is survived by his sister, Nancy Adler, niece Tyna Merrill, cousins Melissa Zeph, Cindy Cockburn, Jim Horden, Bob Theal, Scotty Theal, and Lynda Morris. He is also treasured by many other family members.
He was very grateful to his friends that stood by him and made sure he was safe and well taken care of, particularly Paulette Hooker, Bruce Baron, Mark and Nancy Wertz, Karl Ireland, Johnny and Linda Stigler, PJ Ward, Gary Ultee, and his caregivers, Christine Merrill, Joseph Tate-Wilcox, Sarah Okhiria, and Art and Del MacLaren. We are all blessed to have been his friends.
