Judy was welcomed into the world by her beloved family, neighbors, and friends on the first day of summer, June 21, 1948. From the moment she entered her cherished Jones Road home across from the Cedar River, she radiated unconditional love and brought joy to everyone who was fortunate to meet and get to know her throughout her 76 years.
She was a big sister to Janis K. (Basaraba) Phillips, Gayle M. Basaraba, Randall J. Basaraba and Jean K. Basaraba, sister in-law to Susan Kraft and Paul Phillips; and a beloved aunt to Chad, Alex, Nick, Patrick and Shayna, and great aunt to Zakary, Ryan, and Kateryna.
Judy loved her immediate and extended family, her Catholic faith, and her Ukrainian heritage. She especially loved memories of her time with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in Renton, Washington, Burlington and Belfield North Dakota and from the family homestead ranch in Fairfield, that was rich with Ukrainian food and traditions This love was reflected in her carefully decorated living space where the walls and any available flat surfaces were adorned with family photos, religious icons, and Ukrainian decorations including full sized Ukrainian and American flags proudly displayed on poles mounted on brass stands.
In addition, her décor reflected her love for Hollywood movie stars, and early era TV entertainment like Gilligan’s Island, Lassie, I Love Lucy, Gunsmoke and others too numerous to count. The remaining wall space sported pictures of her beloved MacGyver, by far her favorite Hollywood star and TV series.
Judy loved animals with all her heart. As a young girl on Jones Road her beloved dogs Jet and Benji were her constant companions. She cared deeply for her guinea pigs Pepper, Squeakers, and Ginger. Judy loved riding horses and enjoyed the times she had with her Palomino Sunny. She also loved and helped care for her family member’s pets, again, too numerous to count.
Judy had a strong will and independent spirit. She was passionate and creative. Our family sends gratitude to those at Supportive Living Northwest whose dedicated care for Judy provided her an opportunity to live a semi-independent lifestyle. Thank you for providing her with an opportunity to express her creativity through various outings. She was especially fond of her time at her sewing class with her friends, as well as her time at various other outings, such as the annual Christmas cruise. Judy’s family will be forever grateful for the compassionate care, love and friendship provided to Judy by her caregivers whose lives were also enriched through their relationship with her.
Our condolences to those caregivers who were especially close to Judy, who like us, will forever cherish memories of our time together.
Judy was laid to rest next to her mother and father at Greenwood Memorial Park, Renton Washington, a place she loved to spend time in prayer and reflection for those who had preceded her in death.
