George was born Jan 11, 1929 in Sheffield, PA and lived there throughout high school. It was here in the heart of the Allegheny National Forest that his love of nature and fly fishing developed. He enjoyed many family outings with his parents (Charles W and Bernice) and older brother (Charles G). He worked with his father at the Pennsylvania Gas Company while in high school. In 1948, George enlisted in the Air Force and served four years. After being discharged, he attended and graduated from Penn State University with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1958. Following graduation, George started his career working for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, MO where his projects included the lunar rover. After 16 years he transferred to Boeing and moved to Renton, WA in 1974. He retired from Boeing in 1991. George and his parents lived together starting in 1972 in MO and continuing in Renton until their passing.
He was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Parish in Renton where he volunteered, ushered, and sang in their choir with his father for many years. He enjoyed fly fishing, gardening, flying radio-controlled airplanes, and taking long drives to enjoy family and nature. For many years he would drive to visit his brother’s family in St. Cloud, MN in the springtime and bring his parents when they were able. They would sometimes then venture by car to visit relatives in PA and NY or would return to Renton with additional family members in tow.
George was generous and independent, and he never had a bad word to say about anyone. George’s faith in God and the church was his foundation throughout life. His family as well as his church family and friends meant a lot to George and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by two nieces, Pamela Schultz of MN, and Catherine Stofflet of CA; one nephew, John (Nancy) Slater of MN; and many great-nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents Bernice Ellen (Johnston) Slater and Charles Warren Slater of Renton and brother Charles Gilbert (Dolores) Slater of St. Cloud, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Fr. Sylvester Chanda will be held at 11 am on June 25th preceded by visitation at 10 am, both at St. Anthony Catholic Parish in Renton. Interment will be at Greenwood Memorial Park at 2pm.
