Cindy Smith, born on September 8, 1931, in Tallassee, Alabama, to the late Roxie Byrd and Theodore Washington, led a life marked by dedication, community involvement, and unwavering kindness. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jimmy Lloyd Terry and Theodore Washington, Jr.; brother-in-law, Jackie Gauntt.
After graduating from Wall Street High School in 1955, Cindy began her career at Tallassee Hospital. In 1956, she relocated to Detroit, Michigan, to join her mother. Her devoted husband of 67 years, Edward Smith Sr., soon followed her to Detroit, and they married on February 21, 1956. Together, they raised three children: Edward Smith Jr. (Carla), Anthony Smith, and Tonya Smith.

An active community member, Cindy was an original participant in the Kentucky 8000 Block Club, established in the late 1970s. Although the club disbanded during the housing crisis of 2004-2008, it was revived in 2013, and Cindy eagerly rejoined, participating wholeheartedly in meetings and activities.
Cindy's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of New Zion A.M.E. Zion Church. Additionally, she attended services at St. Patrick Senior Center in Detroit, Michigan.
For nearly 32 years, beginning in 1993, Cindy was a dedicated member of St. Patrick Senior Center, Detroit's largest health, wellness, and activities center for individuals over 55. As an integral part of the Activity Department, she selflessly devoted her time to organizing events and activities. Her volunteer work included assisting with fruit and vegetable sales, calling numbers for BINGO, setting up and distributing prizes for horseracing games, running flea market fundraisers, and serving food at parties and lunches. She particularly enjoyed trips to the casino, favoring the Blazing 7’s slot machine, and ended each day playing "Kings in the Corner" with friends. Cindy's kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment were evident in all her endeavors.
Cindy is survived by her children, Edward Smith, Jr. (Carla), Anthony Smith, Tonya Smith; sister, Dora Nell Gauntt; sister-in-law, Paulette Ross Washington; grandchildren, KeShawn Crenshaw, Scherrie Barley (Sedric), Chelsea White (Duann), Wesley Smith (Shanekia); great grandchildren, NcKeesa White, Laila White, and Blair Barley as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
