She was born in a farming community in Westphalia, MI to John and Martha (Fedewa) Bohr in 1927. She and her 5 sisters, Romilda, Rosella, Mary Ann, Dorothy, and Joan made for lively family life. Education was important to her, starting out in St. Mary’s schools in Westphalia and moving on to St Lawrence School of Nursing in Lansing, MI. She also continued her education throughout her life.
Adelaide was a life-long nurse in Michigan. She began working at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing, followed by Paulina Stearns Hospital in Ludington and Mount Carmel Hospital in Detroit. She had many roles in these hospitals including Charge Nurse, Head Nurse, and in the OR. One of her more challenging roles was Director of Nursing at the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged in Detroit where she managed the nursing staff, as well as developed and taught the nursing orientation and in-service programs. She also developed the policies and procedures to meet the variety of regulations to maintain the facility’s A1 Rating. Adelaide rounded out her career working at a health unit for the federal government’s Division of Occupational Health.
She faithfully served in many capacities in her church and community by volunteering for the Red Cross, as a leader for Campfire Girls, at the St. Suzanne School Library, as treasurer for the Detroit chapter of the Council of Catholic Women, and in many roles at St. Suzanne Parish. Adelaide loved to sing and was part of the choir. She was part of the Worship Commission, Rosary Altar Society, Parish Council, and was also involved in training and coordinating Lectors. She was first to help at her parish when a Parish Nurse program was initiated in the Archdiocese.
Adelaide enjoyed travel and went on a variety of long trips and day trips with her husband, sisters, and even a couple of the granddaughters.
Through her whole life, Adelaide loved her Lord and deepened her relationship with Jesus through prayer and reading and reflection. She prayed the rosary for the intentions of her family and friends every day. She shared her wisdom and counsel (and personal stories) on spiritual, medical, and life matters because she cared. She truly loved and valued (and still does) all of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
