Thomas Leslie Powell and Velma Rose Powell and passed away on December
12, 2022. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his sister,
Marjorie Jean Young and his wife of 67 years, Darlene. Jack is survived by
his son Frank Powell of Boise, his daughter Joyce Messer (Tony) of Palo Cedro,
his daughter Janice Powell of the City of Shasta Lake, and daughter Judy Silva (Domingo) of Mt. Shasta. He was proud to have 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The Powell family came to Summit City when Jack was 8 years old so that his
dad could work on the Shasta Dam project. Jack went to Toyon Elementary School and later he attended Shasta High School in Redding. He enlisted in
the Navy and was a SeaBee stationed in Guam during the Korean conflict as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Jack was a loyal union man and with 73 years
as a member of the Operating Engineers Local 3, he built most of the roads in Northern California. Respected for his knowledge and experience, the Union promoted him to the position of Instructor at the OE3 Joint Apprenticeship Training Center in Sacramento until his retirement.
Jack and Darlene lived in Summit City for more than 85 years where they
enjoyed fishing and boating on Shasta Lake with family and friends. Jack was a member of the American Legion Post 720 and volunteered his time in the community. After retirement he and his wife spent time traveling all over the west with the Redding Moose RV Club and loved spending the winters in Mexico. Jack enjoyed going to car shows and parades in his 1968 Chevelle convertible
and was always tinkering in his garage. As a member of the Shasta Lake Heritage and Historical Society he loved telling stories about the "good old days". He will
be remembered by all that knew him, for his smile and his sincere greeting of "What's the good word?"
The Powells have planned a Celebration of Life Ceremony for 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 21st at the Larry Farr Community Center located at 4499 Main Street in the City of Shasta Lake. If you wish to honor Jack, please make a donation to the Shasta Lake Heritage and Historical Society or any other organization of your choice.
