Mildred “Fern” (Weber) Zimmerman, 87, of Exeter Twp., passed away in Penn State Health- St. Joseph on Friday, December 4, 2015. She was the loving wife of the late Harold “Chick” Zimmerman. The couple married in Reading at St. James Lutheran Church. Chick passed away in 1960.
Born in Reading on January 22, 1928, Fern was a daughter of the late George F. and Mamie G. (Fisher) Weber.
Fern owned her own hair salon for 10 years before she put herself through Vocational School to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was employed with the former St. Joseph Hospital when it was still downtown as a LPN for 20 years before retiring in 1990. She enjoyed going to Atlantic City to visit the casinos. She was an avid Miami Dolphins fan and NASCAR fan, especially her “Jeffy” Gordon.
Fern was never without her best friend, Snowball “Snowy” by her side. She was a loving mother, mother-in-law, Nana, Gammy and aunt.
Surviving are a daughter, Sheila M. (Zimmerman) Reber and her husband, Thomas C.; two grandchildren, Dani L. (Reber) Merkel and her husband, Brian R. and Wes T. Reber; two great grandchildren, Alexa L. and Colby B. Merkel all of Exeter Twp.
Also surviving is a niece, Donna L. (Nicholas) DeLong of Muhlenberg Twp. and other extended family.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Chick; Fern is predeceased by one sister, three brothers and her beloved furry friend, Snowball.
Services for Fern are private and at the convenience of the family. She will be laid to rest next to Chick in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton.
Auman’s Inc. Funeral Home, Reiffton is entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be appreciated at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, 58 Kennel Rd., Birdsboro, PA 19508.
