Harold Donald Barto Sr., 86, of Amity Township, entered eternal rest on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at his residence and surrounded by his loving family. Born in Amityville, PA on May 19, 1938, he was a son to the late Myron G. Barto and Catherine P. (Rhoads) Barto. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his 2 brothers Harvey R. Barto and Russell R. Barto.
Born in a time when the world was different, Harold proudly served his country in the US Army. He was stationed overseas in France with the 574th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, where he earned a Good Conduct Medal before his honorable discharge on May 19, 1963. Upon returning to civilian life, Harold dedicated 30 years of his career to working as a butcher with A&P Stores, followed by a 20-year tenure with Reading Bone, now Growmark FS, from which he retired.
Harold was a simple and very independent man who enjoyed hunting and had a great appreciation for nature and the great outdoors. His appreciation for nature was matched only by his love for dogs. Throughout his life, Harold always had a loyal canine companion by his side, with his current beloved pitbull, Hector, holding a special place in his heart.
Though not one for outward displays of affection, Harold’s love for his family was evident in his own unique and subtle ways. He will be fondly remembered for his quiet strength, deep love for his family, and the lifelong bond he shared with his canine companions. Harold will be missed by all blessed enough to have known him. May he rest in eternal peace.
Harold's spirit will be carried on by his son Harold Donald Barto Jr. and his wife Cynthia, of Exeter Township; and his daughter Sharon L. Riley and her husband Michael, of Lower Alsace. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, many great grandchildren and his beloved pitbull Hector to cherish his memory.
Inurnment with military honors will be held privately at St. Paul's UCC Cemetery (Amityville), in accordance with his family’s wishes.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Harold's memory may be made to Animal Rescue League of Berks County, 58 Kennel Rd., Birdsboro, PA 19508
