Matthew Todd Moulton

Matthew Todd Moulton, age 42, of Suffield passed away December 4, 2020. At a young age Matt knew he wanted a life that was centered on helping people. During his youth he spent countless hours working on and ultimately achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Matt served for 24 years as a Firefighter/Paramedic in many different communities.

Before graduating from Rootstown High School and Maplewood Career Center he joined the Cadet Program with Rootstown Fire Department where he was hired on as a Firefighter/ Paramedic. Over the years Matt never turned down an opportunity to help. He was a Firefighter/ Paramedic at the Suffield Fire Department where he served for 23 years. During this time Matt also joined several surrounding area departments.

Matt worked as an Emergency Dispatcher/Communication Specialist at Nimishillen Township Fire Department where he not only received sage advice from his dispatching “mothers” Lisa Weisburn Vissoc and Cheryl Lombardi but co-created “Man Meat Wednesday” with his “brother” Jason Kroah.

Matt was a M.I.C.U Paramedic team member for Med-Flight Ohio and then Flight Paramedic with the Spirit of Marshfield, Saint Joseph Hospital, in Marshfield Wisconsin. Additionally, Matt was also a Firefighter/Paramedic at Ravenna Township Fire Department, a certified Dive Officer for the Portage County Water Rescue Team, and a Firefighter/Paramedic for the Mogadore Fire Department.

While working at the Suffield Fire Department Matt achieved the rank of Captain. During that time Matt cofounded and served as an advisor for the Explorers Program. Matt’s unfailing dedication to the Explorers produced many career-oriented firefighters. Matt also served as Fire Prevention Officer, Certified Fire Instructor and was a Level 2 Fire Fighter/Paramedic. He was the instigator of many firehouse pranks, and an established winner of The Ice Cream Offense List. Matt was a recipient of the 2004 Red Cross Real Heroes Award.

Matt had a desire to help and connect with those around him. He participated in multiple aid trips delivering hay to agricultural areas devastated by fire across the country with Ohio Relief Haulers. Matt worked for Duma Meats and hauled cattle for Overlook Farm while developing his retirement dreams of expanding his own farm, Hidden Meadows, and hauling cattle.

Matt attended Maranatha Bible Church and was a beloved member of every community he was involved in. He was known to close friends as “Hoopy”, “el Captain”, “Mattie-Ice”, “Wiggle-Wiggle” or “Guarding Angel”.

He is survived by his wife Rachel, daughter Grace, step-daughter Emma Shircliff, mother-in-law Diana Murphy, brothers-in-law; Nathaniel (Shelley) Pirogowicz, Joshua (Gina) Pirogowicz, Benjamin (Briana) Pirogowicz, Josiah Pirogowicz, and Philip (Danielle) Pirogowicz. Sisters-in-law; Elisha (Judson) Babcock, Lydia (Michael) Battaglia, Naomi (fiancé Brian Pohlmeyer) Pirogowicz and Angie Kintigh. Nieces and nephews; Isabella, Elizabeth and Claire Pirogowicz, Kara, Tobin, Abigail, and Camden Babcock, Faith, Wyatt, and Lillian Battaglia, Tripp Pirogowicz, and Mira Mizer. Many close aunts, uncles, and cousins of the Murphy – Pirogowicz Family. Beloved uncle Alan Moulton who Matt was especially close to, mother Debbie Moulton, nephew Mason Anderson and extended Moulton Family members. As well as numerous friends and his beloved firefighting family.

He loved the outdoors and spent countless hours hunting, hiking, 4-wheeling, working with his daughter on her 4-H animals, and perhaps mostly; having bonfires that were way too big for a sensible firefighter. His perfect day would be spent with family, whether watching Grace show her lamb, 4-wheeling with Emma, fighting over a Christmas tape ball, or planning the perfect water balloon fight. If that perfect day was a Wednesday, it would not be complete without hauling calves and having dinner with the Knapp Family.

Matt was a beloved son, husband, father, stepfather, uncle, friend, and mentor. Matt was fiercely loyal and looked for the good in everyone. Matt had a positive impact on every person he came in contact with. His kind heart, quick smile, contagious laugh, and good-natured pranks will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Especially his “bromance boys” Mike Carson, TJ Fox, Michael Morrison, Ben Feeman, Kyle Knapp, Nick Reynolds, Bruce Krager, James (JJ) Taylor, Garrett Cook, and Mario Cristino.

The funeral will be a private service for immediate family and invited guests.

There will be a public drive-through held at the Suffield Fire Station on Sunday December 20, 2020 at 1:00pm for those wishing to honor Matt.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be received by the Suffield Fire Department in care of Grace Moulton’s college fund.
