He was born August 15, 1929, in Akron, Ohio, to parents Joseph W. and Esther C. (Barber) Marshall. He grew up helping on his family`s small farm in Tallmadge. This is where he developed a lifelong love of farming. While plowing many of his neighbor`s "Victory Gardens", he met Jean , the love of his life, who would one day become his wife.
After graduating number two in his class at Tallmadge H.S. Chuck served in the US Army, and proudly earned an award for marksmanship.
Early on with his dad, he ran his own excavating business. After marrying Jean in 1952, he used his bulldozer to dig the basement for their first home in Dollar Lake, which he built himself. A "Jack-of-all-trades", he was the head carpenter, plumber, and electrician! It was here that he and Jean raised their family.
They moved to Atwater in 1975 so he could resume his love for farming as a side business. This is where he lived the rest of his life.
He was amazingly accomplished without a formal degree. A manufacturing engineer, he designed the patented "Fast N Tite" fitting and also several factories for the Parker-Hannifin Corporation during a 46 year career, retiring as Head of Industrial Engineering.
One of Chuck’s main passions was music. He was a talented musician who could play several instruments. He shared his passion with his children and they all learned to play something, even though it meant learning polkas! He started playing in bands as a young man and continued well into his eighties. His last band, the Frank Stanger Orchestra, was inducted into the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame & Museum.
Chuck was an active member of his community. He was a faithful member of the Atwater United Methodist Church. Chuck was also a former member of the Atwater Lion’s Club and served on the township zoning board.
He enjoyed sharing his views on a variety of social and political issues and was an enthusiastic contributor to the Record-Courier editorial pages.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife Doris Jean (Martin) Marshall . He was also preceded by his parents, his sisters Evelyn Rupp and Esther Baker, and his brother Joseph Marshall.
Chuck is survived by his children: Charles H. (Debora) Marshall, Bill (Sandy) Marshall, Scott (Diana) Marshall, and Sue (Rick) Knapp, his 11 grandchildren, and his 16 great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to the Atwater Fire Department, the staff at Homeinstead, and special caregivers Missy and Jonnie.
Graveside services will be officiated by Reverend Tina Gallaher on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at 10:30 AM at Atwater Cemetery. A time of fellowship and celebration of Chuck’s life will follow at the Atwater Town Hall. Condolences and fond memories may be shared at www.wood-kortright-borkoski.com.
