Bill was born on September 4, 1942 to the late Vance Leroy Northcutt and Lorena Braswell Northcutt in Durham, NC. He attended public school in Durham, graduating from Durham High School. He went on to attend Wake Forest University where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Upon graduation from Wake Forest, Bill enlisted in the US Navy and served aboard the USS Guadalcanal. He continued his service in the US Naval Reserve and eventually retired as a Commander. He enjoyed many of the friendships he made during this time.
After his time on active duty, Bill moved to Winston-Salem, NC and started a career with Hanes Hosiery. During his time in Winston-Salem, he met his wife Linda and started a family. He also earned an MBA from UNC Greensboro. Eventually, the family moved to Raleigh where he started a career in the food brokerage business with his father-in-law. He continued in the food business until his retirement in 2014.
Bill developed Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis which required a lung transplant. He shared more years of life with his family and friends thanks to the generosity of an organ donor. He received a donor lung in 2015. Bill was grateful to the donor, the donor’s family and the transplant team at Duke Medical for providing him with six additional years. He appreciated the support from the staff at the Duke Wellness and Rehab Center and his fellow lung transplant recipients.
Bill is survived by his wife, Linda Jones Northcutt; son, Chris and wife Kristy; daughter, Nancy and husband Greg; daughter, Cathy and husband Kyle and five grandchildren: Mackenzie, Thomas, Zachary, Meghan and Molly. Bill’s brother, Bob Northcutt and wife Kay, reside in Wake Forest, NC.
A private family graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cary, NC. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at a future date.
