William Robert “Bill” Horton passed peacefully from this life on August 31, 2019. He was surrounded by his loving family and caregivers during the last days of his life. Bill was born on October 20, 1942 in Raleigh, NC; son of the late Wilbur Horton and Odelle Woolard Horton. He was raised in Washington, NC with brothers Edward Earl Horton (Lou) and the late James Wilbur Horton.
Bill joined the United States Air Force after his graduation from high school. Following four years of military service, he studied at Chowan College and attained his degree from Atlantic Christian College. He became a teacher in Wilson, NC. Bill was the head wrestling coach and a member of the football coaching staff at Fike High School. Later, he went into commercial development in Wilson and pursued that career until he retired.
Bill was a devoted and loving husband and father. He was an absolute champion for his family and supported his wife and children’s individual successes with an abundance of passion, love, and generosity. He is survived by his wife Linda, children; Kimberly Lynn Horton-Polensky and husband Ted, William Bradford Horton and wife Jade; and grandchildren; Sarah Grace Acker, Rachel Beth Acker, Luke Allan Acker, Richard Holton Westbrook III, and Tyler Christian Polensky.
Family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5:30-7:30 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home. A Memorial Service celebrating Bill's life will be held on Friday, September 6, 2019 at 11 am at The Summit Church - Blue Ridge Campus - 3249 Blue Ridge Road - Raleigh, NC 27612.
Bill’s life will be forever marked by his incredible generosity. And to honor that legacy his family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Far East Broadcasting Company. FEBC is an interdenominational ministry whose sole purpose is to share the Gospel to the world through radio, the Internet, and emerging technologies.
