Thomas Cox Powell III, 78, of Raleigh, passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday September 26, 2015. He was born November 6, 1936 in Wake County, son of the late Thomas Cox Jr and Katherine (Duff) Powell.
Thomas attended Ravenscroft High School, Camden Academy, NC State and UNC Chapel Hill. He also served in the US Army.
Tom was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh. He was the founder and President of Powell and Company Realtors and also of Thomas Cox Powell III Building Co. Additionally he was a Hall of Fame member of the Raleigh - Wake County Home Builders Association, having been very active for over 25 years, including service as chairman of the Parade of Homes, and member of both the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He was honored as Builder of the Year in 1995. Tom also served on the Board of Directors of the Raleigh Board of Realtors for many years. His other volunteer service included years of teaching classes at the NC Realtors School in Chapel Hill, conducting seminars at area Home Builders Association chapters and volunteering with the North Carolina USO.
Tom co-founded The Fish Off, an annual fishing tournament now in its 39th year, which he dearly loved. He's a member of the Fish Off Hall of Fame. He loved boating, salt water fishing and the ocean.
Tom was predeceased by his brother in law Steve Bowser.
He is survived by his wife Kipp (Cohoon) Powell of Raleigh, his children: Thomas C. Powell IV and his wife Cynthia of Raleigh and Lynn Powell Schultz and her husband Bob of Raleigh, grandchildren: Robert Burleson Schultz, William McCabe Schultz and Thomas Cox Powell V all of Raleigh, his sister Katherine Powell of Meadville, PA, nephew William Duckworth, nieces Katherine McGee and Ali Williams, and Kipp’s son Jason Groot of Raleigh.
A funeral service will be held 11am Friday October 2, 2015 at Christ Episcopal Church 120 E Edenton St, Raleigh, NC 27601. Interment will follow at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
