Sally was born in Raleigh, NC and loved being a citizen of this fair city. She enjoyed attending Wiley Elementary School and Needham Broughton High School (NBHS), where her favorite memories were formed. She was both a student there as well as an active member of the Class of ’58 and served on the Board of the NBHS Alumni Association for many years.
She graduated from Peace College in 1961 and later served as President of the Raleigh Junior Women’s Club where she was active in many charitable events.
Sally stayed close to her family. Jill Levine, the daughter who held Sally’s heart and who loved and cared for her mom throughout her life was also her best friend. Together they enjoyed beach trips, shopping trips, holiday and family birthday celebrations and countless hours of simply being in each other’s company. Her parents, Woody and Eleanor Hayes, Sally and her sister Betsy were long time residents of Raleigh. Although brother David and sister Jenny moved from Raleigh, the family gathered annually for Hayes family Beach weeks at Atlantic Beach. Sally’s other endearing family members of the feline variety include Sneakers, Ally, Lulu, and Leah.
She worked for over 23 years at NC Electric Membership Corporation in Human Resources and later rose to Director of the Department, an ideal position for her, given her social and organizational talents. After retiring, Sally continued her friendships with co-workers with lunch outings and company holiday parties.
She was preceded in death by her parents Woody and Eleanor Hayes, brother David, and nephew David P Lewis. She is survived by her daughter, Jill Levine of Raleigh, and sisters Betsy Hunt (Patricia Davis) of Willow Spring, NC, and Jenny Lewis (James B Lewis) of Farmville, NC. Sally was a favorite Aunt to Bob, Chris, and Jon Hayes; Robert and Russell Hunt; and David and Ben Lewis.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on April 29 at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, Raleigh, NC. A reception will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association of Raleigh, 5171 Glenwood Avenue #101, Raleigh, NC 27612, www.alz.org
