Mr. Pate was born on June 15, 1920 in Lumberton, N.C. to the late Robert and Dora Davis Pate. Mr. Pate spent most of his life in Raleigh. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina State University in 1943. Much of his career was spent at North Carolina State. He retired from the position of Vice Chancellor for Foundations and University Relations at NC State in 1985. He remained a devoted supporter of the University and Wolfpack athletics for the remainder of his life. Prior to that, he was Assistant to the President, The University of North Carolina, and Associate Director for Development, South Regional Education Board, Atlanta, GA. From 1943- 1962, he was Director of Information Services at NC State.
Mr. Pate was a member of Highland United Methodist Church in Raleigh for many years. In later years, he was affiliated with Duncan United Methodist Church, Georgetown, SC, and St Pauls Waccamaw United Methodist Church, Pawleys Island, SC.
He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-four years, Paige Brodie Pate, two brothers, and four sisters.
Mr. Pate is survived by his daughter, Mary Paige Murray, son-in-law, Bill Murray, of Georgetown, his granddaughter, Cameron Kelly, her husband, Chad Kelly of Raleigh, and brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Phyllis Pate of Lumberton.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, September 6th at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. also at Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment will be at Raleigh Memorial Park.
