Robert Needham Hendry died Saturday, March 5, 2016 in Hillsborough, NC. He was born November 25, 1925, in Fort Myers, Florida to the late John Wall and Gladys Roper Needham Hendry. He was the grandson of Louis Asbury and Ella Frierson Hendry of Fort Myers and George Ross and Mary Louise Carlisle Needham of Jacksonville, Florida. In 1947, he married in Tallahassee, Florida to Miss Gloria Sue Reed of Northern Virginia.
Mr. Hendry was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, Jacksonville. He attended the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. In 1950, he received his EM degree from the Colorado School of Mines, Golden. Mr. Hendry was a veteran of WWII during which he served in the US Army Air Corps. He retired from the US Army Corps of Engineers Reserve with the rank of Captain. Robert Hendry's professional career began with employment at ERDL, the engineering laboratories, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. In 1957 he moved to Charlotte, N.C. where he worked as Chief Staff Engineer for Douglas Aircraft Corporation, Missile Division. Mr. Hendry and his family moved to Raleigh, NC in 1967. From that time until his retirement in 1992 he was employed by the Research Triangle Institute, RTP, NC.
Both Mr. Hendry and his wife shared a strong interest in genealogy. He served as President of the Raleigh Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution and as Governor of
the national Jamestowne Society. He was a member of the National Huguenot Society, North Carolina Chapter, the Order of First Families of Virginia, the Order of the First
Families of North Carolina, and the Order of the Descendants of the Emperor Charlemagne in the United States.
Mr. Hendry was predeceased by his wife, Gloria Sue Reed Hendry; son Robert Carlisle Hendry; Robert Carlisle's wife Dr. Karen Hendry and brother John Wall Hendry, Jr., of Jacksonville, Florida; He is survived by son Douglas Reed Hendry of Hillsborough, NC and sister Elizabeth Jacobson Friend of Zephyrhills, Florida.
A graveside service will be held at 11am on Friday, March 11, 2016 at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal, Virginia.
