His friends and colleagues knew him as Bob. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served from 1960-1964. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. He worked at IBM in Newark, NJ, Boca Raton, FL and Raleigh, NC as an electrical engineer for over 40 years.
Bob enjoyed tennis, golf, and running. He was a devoted Florida State Seminoles football fan. He enjoyed doing puzzles and sudoku. He loved nature, sci-fi and travel shows. Bob looked forward to annual family trips to Hilton Head Island. He loved traveling the world with his wife and visiting with family and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Henry John Farrell and Frances Brameyer, his beloved Aunts Theresa and Eleanor Brameyer, his sister Rita Nickel, niece Corrinna Farrell and nephew Scott Farrell.
He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn of 56 years of Raleigh, daughters Jeannette Long (Tom) of Asheville and Bernadette Van Slyck (Scott) of Raleigh, grandchildren Robert Hampton (Shelby), Ashley Van Slyck, and Scotty Van Slyck, brothers Henry Farrell and Charlie Farrell, sister Denise Mould and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass and interment was held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a Veterans organization or Dementia Alliance of NC.
