Richard C. Axtell passed away on January 24, 2017. He was born August 4, 1932 in Medina, New York to the late Franklin and Marion (Thomas) Axtell. After receiving his B.A. and M.A. degrees in the biological sciences from the State University of New York at Albany, Dr. Axtell had a Fulbright in the Philippines and also served two years in the U. S. army.
Dr. Axtell received his Ph.D. in Entomology from Cornell University. He and his wife, Elizabeth moved to Raleigh in 1962, after he accepted a position with North Carolina State University. As a Professor of Medical and Veterinary Entomology, Dr. Axtell engaged in both teaching and research, and oversaw the training of numerous graduate students.
Richard was predeceased by his brother Clyde Axtell.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Elizabeth, his daughter Nancy Hewitt (Joe), his son Robert Axtell (Andrea), granddaughter Lauren, step-granddaughter Bre, and sister Rhoda Michaels.
The family wishes to thank Transitions LifeCare and the Oaks at Mayview for the care they provided to Richard in the final months of his life.
The family will receive from 1-2 pm Saturday January 28 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home 300 Saint Mary’s St. Raleigh, where a funeral service will begin at 2 pm.
