Norwood (Woody) B. Woodard, Jr., son of the late Dr. Norwood B. and Marie Woodard, died Sunday, November 20, in Raleigh, NC. He was born in Durham, NC, on February 16, 1939, and lived most of his life in Richmond, VA, having relocated to Raleigh in 2012.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Christopher Woodard; son, Mark and his wife, Meredith; granddaughter, Kinley; grandson, Coleman; and son, Scott. Also surviving are stepdaughter, Westray Veasey and her husband, Glenn; step-grandsons, Wade and Reese; step-son, Turner Bunn, IV and his wife, Robin; step -granddaughters, Cappa and Mack; sister, Ann Hardin; and brother, Bob and his wife, Beverly.
A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, he attended Mars Hill College and graduated from the University of Richmond where he attended T. C. Williams School of Law. He held graduate degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University and the College of William and Mary. He was a life-long learner and innovative educator. He taught and coached at Collegiate School and served as Headmaster of St. Michael’s School. During his tenure at St. Christopher’s School, he served as head of Middle School, head of Lower School and Assistant Headmaster. Upon retirement, he enjoyed a brief career in real estate.
As a young man, he was active in his church and served on the Board of Directors of the Richmond Jaycees. He was a member of the inaugural class of Leadership Metro Richmond and served as a member and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a member of Richmond Kiwanis.
Woody was a true Renaissance man who read voraciously and was a self-educated wine enthusiast. He was an adventuresome traveler and enjoyed woodworking and creative painting.
At his request, a celebration of his life will be private.
