Nina Margaret Yeager

Nina was born on September 24, 1946 in Philadelphia, Pa and graduated from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia with a BA in English. She married Ralph Yeager on September 18, 1971 and moved to Kingston NY where she was a county social worker. She and Ralph moved to Raleigh in 1976, initially working for Wake County Social Services before going back to school at NC State to get a Masters Degree in Public Administration in 1981. She went to work for the NC General Assembly as a member of the Fiscal Research staff in the area of Health and Human Services. In 1991 she left Fiscal Research to join the Governor’s Office of Budget and Management where she served until 2001 when she became the NC Medicaid Director, retiring in 2003.

Since retirement Nina and Ralph have enjoyed extensive travel to all the corners of the world, often with friends. Nina was a member of St Michaels Episcopal Church in Raleigh. In addition to travel, she enjoyed reading, theater, entertaining friends, painting and gardening, particularly peonies. Nina was a kind hearted, gracious person who always was welcoming and generous and firmly committed to social justice.

She was predeceased in death by her father, Romanus J. Buckley and mother Margaret O’Keefe Buckley, both of Philadelphia, Pa; and sister-in-law, Susan Buckley of Annapolis, Md.

She is survived by husband, Ralph of Raleigh; brother, Joseph Buckley of Annapolis, Md; sister-in-law, Sue Hayes and her husband Richard of Wilmington NC; brother-in-law, Reed Yeager and his wife, Julie of Hilton Head, SC; as well as several nephews, nieces and numerous close friends.

A memorial service will be held at St Michael’s Episcopal Church, Raleigh, NC on Friday, October 22, 2021 at 2 PM.
