Morris was born in Pabianice, Poland on April 3, 1927. He endured the hardships of life in the Jewish ghettos and the horrors of Nazi concentration camps including Auschwitz-Birkenau and Dachau. After liberation from the Nazis Morris served as a member of the Jewish Brigade helping Jews displaced during the war resettle in Israel.
Morris was later able to reunite with his brother Nat the only other member of his immediate family to survive the Holocaust. Together they emigrated to America to live with an uncle who had left Poland prior to the second world war.
Morris lived most of his adult life in New Jersey, working the majority of his professional career in the garment industry. He and his wife Carol owned and operated Flora Fashions in Stanhope, NJ for over 20 years. Morris was heavily active in the Jewish community and a huge advocate for Jewish education. He was instrumental in the creation of the Hebrew Academy of Morris County.
In 2000 Morris and Carol moved to Raleigh, NC to be closer to their children. A lifelong proponent of education Morris spent his later years relating his experiences with bigotry, discrimination, and silence during the holocaust. His hope was that through education the horrors of genocide would never be repeated. He collaborated with Meredith College professor Dr. Carolyn Happer to write his story Chosen for Destruction: The Story of a Holocaust Survivor which was published in 2013.
Morris received numerous awards from civic, military, community, and religious groups including Israel’s Prime Minister’s award. Of all Morris’s accomplishments his true pride and joy was his Family. Morris was the proud father of seven children, grandfather of 18, and great grandfather of 8.
Morris is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Carol; his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and a beloved extended family. Morris is preceded in death by his son Richard, who tragically passed away in 2011.
Funeral service will be held Monday, September 4 at 1:00 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, with burial service to follow at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery, 450 N. State Street, Raleigh.
Donations in Morris’s honor can be made to the Foundation for the NC Council on the Holocaust, the Holocaust Endowment Fund for the NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT.org), or Congregation Bethe Meyer to support their efforts in promoting education, understanding, and peace.
