Scott Petty was born January 18, 1998, in Raleigh. He attended St. Michael's Parish Day School, then Lacy Elementary, followed by Daniels Middle and Broughton High, before graduating from Harrells Christian Academy. He was a gentle and calm child who could always be counted upon to fall asleep in an automobile if the drive was any kind of trip. Scott grew up on Canterbury Road, where he often walked home from school with neighborhood kids. In his youth, he played football for the Cougars and lacrosse, but his favorite activities were always riding his tractor, bush hogging on the family farm in York, South Carolina, or surfing, fishing, and swimming at Sunset Beach.
Wherever Scott went in life he made many friends, young and old, and people were always visiting Scott and inviting him to go hunting and fishing or to a party or just to ride somewhere. Scott had a good life, and he was upbeat and positively charming. Any personal shortcomings he had were far outweighed by the joy and spirit he imbued. He was beloved by many and was the clear favorite of the family’s longtime lab, Rosie, and his Walker hound puppy, Chief. Scott loved his family and always told his father that he was his best friend. Scott dearly loved his longtime girlfriend, Jessie Boyette, who stood by him through thick and thin for many years. Jessie never ceased being kind and supportive and truly loved Scott through his difficult periods to the very end.
Scott loved the out of doors, especially working on a surveying crew in college and helping his father on the cattle farm. Scott earned his Associate degree in Agriculture from North Carolina State University and was working with an agricultural concern when he fell asleep in his bed Sunday night and never awoke. His beautiful smile and large pale blue eyes could almost always defuse any situation, but sadly, they were no match for his tragic and untimely death. Scott was a Christian, and as such, he is now lying untroubled and at peace in the palm of God’s hand.
Scott is survived by his mother and father, Amy and Mike Petty, and his younger brother, Campbell, all of Raleigh. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Myrtle Petty, of Clinton, and his maternal grandparents, Don and Ann Campbell and Susan and Joe Newberry, all of Raleigh. Scott is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a large group of dear friends.
