Michael T. Keough, 58, died peacefully on June 13, 2015 at the Transitions Life Care Home, surrounded by the love of his family. Born April 20, 1957 in Binghamton, NY, he lived in the Raleigh area for 21 years. Michael was the beloved son of Bernadette Keough and the late James Keough. His large Irish family consists of two brothers, James and Kevin; six sisters: Susan Collins, Alice Sirianna, Sarah Keough, Anne Keough Mezgar, Therese Esworthy and Mary Beth Madden. Michael is survived by the loves of his life: his wife of 24 years, Mary Harrington Keough, and his daughters, Emily Sarah and Grace Anne Keough of Raleigh and numerous nieces and nephews.
Michael was optimistic, intellectually curious, and valued education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan. For over 30 years, as he worked in health care administration, he strived to achieve the goal of providing high quality, affordable health care for all. ,Michael was a kind and joyful soul with a dry sense of humor. He loved music, dancing, sports, and traveling. A man of deep faith, Michael was passionate about social justice causes, and committed to participating in their advancement. Above all else, he loved his family, and they returned that love. His loss is felt profoundly by family, friends, and community.
Michael was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 48 and with great courage, faith, and superb medical treatment lived a full and active life for the next decade. During his high school and college years, he was an outstanding cross-country runner. Michael faced his cancer as if he were running a long distance race, taking the journey step by step, strong, determined, and always aware of God’s presence in his life. The Keough family would like to thank Dr. Mark Graham for his compassionate care throughout Michael’s illness and Transitions Life Care for their gentle care at the end of Michael’s journey.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh, on Saturday, June 20th, 2015 at 1p,m, The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Michael’s memory to Highland Methodist Church, Interfaith Food Shuttle, Transitions Life Care (formerly Hospice of Wake County) or to the charity of your choice.
