Born November 24, 1935 in Raleigh, she was a daughter of the late Manly and Marie Britt. She was preceded in death by her brother, Manly Britt. She worked for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for 33 years in various financial positions, and retired in 1998 as the Director of Business Services. Upon her retirement in 1998, she was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the Governor for her service to the State of North Carolina. She was also a lifetime member of the North Carolina Association of School Boards. The Lou Thompson Award was established in her honor to be presented annually to a member that exemplifies the qualities of integrity and commitment that she exhibited every day.
Survivors include her two sons, Oliver G. Thompson, III, of Wake Forest, Dan Thompson, and his wife Denise, of Lafayette, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Hannah Honeycutt, and her husband Josh, Elizabeth Thompson, and her fiancé Ronnie Barnes, Madison Thompson, Meredith Thompson, and her fiancé Andre Bessette, and Reagan Thompson. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Dowdy.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 1pm at Forest Hills Baptist Church, 201 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607. The family will receive friends following the service.
