Marie Blackwell Lewis died October 16, 2024, at 95 years of age. She was preceded in death by her husband William M. Lewis (Bill), granddaughter Nina Kaye Stimpson, and her brothers and sisters - Janie Leigh Harris, Leslie Blackwell, Elwood Blackwell, Elbert Blackwell, Doris Bradsher, Lena Mae Brownd, and Alex Jack “AJ” Blackwell. Marie and Bill were married for 61 years and set an example for a love grounded in faith. Marie is survived by her children Karl M. Lewis (Jennifer), Keith D. Lewis (Mary Jane), Karen L. McCarthy (Daryl), Kaye L. Berg (Don), and Kirsten L. Spirakis (Peter); and grandchildren Emily Lewis Golden (Brandon), Lydia Lewis, Mason Lewis, Kelly Anne Lewis Gill (Joshua), Caroline Lewis Wilkerson (Hayes), Abby Lewis Wilkes (Bradley), Cole and Andie McCarthy, Nathan and Lawson Berg, and Sara and Clay Stimpson; and great grandchildren Hudson and Carson Golden, and Sophie and Chase Gill.
Marie was born in Oxford, NC, and grew up on the family dairy farm where she learned the values of faith, family, responsibility and resilience. She graduated from Mars Hill College. She was an active member of First Baptist Church since 1957, where she served others diligently with compassion, love, and a persistent strength of mind.
Marie had many close relationships that revolved around her roles as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She valued each relationship dearly, nurturing them with her time and attention. Her gestures ranged from smiles and laughter to flowers, comfort, prayers, and the provision of wisdom gained from experience. We have been blessed to have her in our lives, as her loving spirit enriched us all.
There will be a service at First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC on Saturday, October 26th at 11:00 am, followed by a time of visitation and reception in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be at approximately 2:00 pm at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue.
