Macon was born in Lynchburg, VA on March 25, 1937 to Robert Hughes III and Macon Walters Hughes.
She graduated from Durham High School and studied at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (which became The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1964). Women were not allowed to attend UNC Chapel Hill as freshmen or sophomores until 1963. She met Jim while he was attending UNC-CH and playing basketball for Frank McGuire.
Macon and James (Jim/Wink) E. McDavid Jr. were married on September 6, 1958. Macon is preceded in passing by both her husband James (2015) and their son, Mark Stephen McDavid (2003).
Macon was an artist and a dancer. As a young woman, she and her mother moved to New York City so she could train with the then with famous June Taylor on Broadway. She and Jim built their first home in Charlotte and later moved to Ohio and then Virginia. Macon owned a shop in Chagrin Falls, Ohio where she created unique artwork including a custom designer purse (pail) sought after by prominent professional athletes’ wives. She loved children. She served in many roles such as vacation bible school and serving the special needs children and families in her community. She also loved the beach and spent many summers and many of her later years at Sunset Beach, NC.
Macon is survived by her two daughters, Robin Nolan of Florida and Sherri Schaffroth of Cary, NC, six grandchildren, Sierra McDavid, Kylie Macon Nelson, Ryan Schaffroth, Jamie Nolan, Liam Schaffroth and Holly Nolan, and one great grandchild Hunter Macon Wright as well as other family and friends.
The celebration of life will be held at a later time.
