Joe was born in Memphis TN. He graduated from Catholic High School in Memphis and received a BS degree from Memphis State University. Joe worked as a computer programmer for IBM, American Express and the State of NC. Joe was also an innovator and a co-founder of several software companies.
His approach was always that “impossible is only a degree of difficulty”. He was well known for getting things accomplished when others considered the task to be as difficult as getting “pigs to fly". He encouraged everyone to always do their best.
Joe enjoyed playing, coaching and watching sports and was always up for a good game of bridge. He had a passion for acting in local plays, especially A Christmas Carol. He loved games, logic puzzles, trains, Christmas, and his family. Joe had a bold personality and an abundant sense of humor and he will be greatly missed by everyone.
Joe is survived by his wife, Peggy, and his three sons, Chris (Cindy), Andy, and Brian (Megan) and two grandchildren, Michael and Claire. Joe is also survived by his sister, Mimi Trouy (Vic), three sisters in law, Ruth Ann Farrell, Jodi Farrell, and Beth Bain, brother in law, John Bain, and many nieces and nephews. Joe is preceded in death by his parents Evelyn Jeffries and Edward James Farrell, his two brothers, Edward James Farrell, Jr. and Paul David Farrell, and a sister-in-law Jean Smart.
A Funeral Mass for Joe will be held August 5th at 11:00 am at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church on Falls of the Neuse Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org or by mail to American Diabetes Association PO BOX 7023 Merrifield VA 22116.
