Dr. John Malcolm McAllister DDS

Malcolm was born to Mary Harrison Lee McAllister and George W. McAllister in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. Malcolm was nine years old when he moved to Raleigh. He graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in 1950 where he met his life’s mate, Jo Ann Meacham also from Raleigh.

Malcolm attended North Carolina State University and transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a BS in chemistry and a Doctor of Dental Surgery.

He and Jo Ann married in the summer of 1955 in West Raleigh Presbyterian Church.

In 1958 Jo Ann and Malcolm moved to Raleigh where he joined Dr. W. T. Martin’s dental practice. After a successful dental career, Malcolm retired in 1986.

After retirement, he was able to spend more time pursuing his many interests. Besides his dental practice he started a design and prototype company. Having learned building construction from his father, Malcolm built several commercial buildings, apartments and homes.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, traveling throughout North America and abroad. He obtained his private pilot’s license early in life which afforded him the opportunity to explore the lower 48.

Malcolm belonged to the Rotary Club of Raleigh where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also on Governor Jim Hunt’s Healthcare Commission. He helped form the Raleigh Dental Society and was a member of the NC Dental Society. He was also a member of the Ole Raleigh Boys and Raleigh Jaycees. He was a stockholder member of Raleigh Golf Association (RGA), the second oldest golf course in Raleigh.

Although Malcolm was a man of many talents and interests, his greatest love was his family and friends.

Malcolm is survived by his wife, Jo Ann and two sons; George F. McAllister and wife, Barbara of Charlotte, NC and their children Katherine and William “Will” and M. Lee McAllister and wife, Julie of Greensboro, NC and their children Lucien, Mollie and Parker.

A graveside service will be held at 2pm this Saturday, January 24 at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh. Visitation will follow immediately after the service at North Carolina State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh.
