Herbert Raymond Madry, Jr., M.D. of Raleigh, died Monday, 9 May, 2016. He was born in Tarboro, North Carolina on July 20, 1930 to Herbert Raymond Madry, Sr. and Euphemia McKenzie Madry. His sister Isabel was born five years later. Ray attended public school in Scotland Neck, and graduated from Wake Forest University, where he received a B.S. degree in 1952. He was a member of the Alpha Epsilom Delta pre-medicine honors fraternity. He then graduated from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest, in 1956 with an M.D. He completed his medical residency as an officer in the U.S. Naval Medical Corps, and retired honorably from the Navy as a lieutenant, after completing service both at sea and ashore. He completed a two-year residency in family medicine at the Oklahoma University School of Medicine in 1960. He was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, He married his wife of 56 years, Betty Ellen Madry on Oct. 1, 1960, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He entered private medical practice in Roseboro, NC for two years, and then moved to Raleigh, N.C. in 1963. He maintained an active private practice in Raleigh, often making multiple house calls each day and doing rounds at both hospitals. His patients loved him and to this day recall his kind and helpful service to them. In 1969 he entered a three-year radiology residency at the UNC School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, which he completed in 1971. He then joined the Wake Radiology group in Raleigh, as was the sixth physician in the practice, which has grown significantly since then. He retired from medical practice in 1996, and enjoyed his retirement years in Raleigh. They were members of White Memorial Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Betty Ellen Madry, his two sons, Prof. Scott Lynndon Hathaway Madry, his wife Sarah Brandes Madry of Chapel Hill and their daughter Adrienne Ellen Dickerson Madry; and son, Randall Hayden Hathaway Madry and his wife Stagg Madry and their son Hayden Madry and his wife Sarah Walston Madry, granddaughter, Caroline Madry Alexander and her husband Douglas Alexander and their son Charles Raymond Alexander. He is also survived by his sister Isabel Madry Zimmerman and her husband Dr. Jay Zimmerman of Carbondale, Illinois, and their daughter Dr. Sarah McKenzie Zimmerman of New York City, and their son Jay Zimmerman III and his wife Julie and their children Jacob and Kate of Cordona, Tennessee; cousins Amanda Mitterling and her husband John Mitterling of Raleigh and Alexandra McMillan Mordecai and her husband Samuel Mordecai of Raleigh, and cousin Fannie Memory Mitchell of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 13. The family will receive friends after the service in the Jane Bell Gathering Space at White Memorial. A private graveside service will be held at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
