Herbert D. Jackson, 84, of Raleigh, passed away Thursday May 10, 2012. Born December 3, 1927 in Spartanburg, SC, to the late Harley and Thelma Kirby Jackson. Mr. Jackson served in WW II with the Army Air Corps and in the Vietnam War with the US Air Force. He retired from the Air Force after 20 dedicated years of service to his country. He worked at General Industries in Goldsboro before moving to Arizona where he worked as a city bus driver with Sun Tran for 10 years. Mr. Jackson was a longtime member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Raleigh and was an avid Blue Grass guitar player.
Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Silas Jonathan Collins and his brother, Bill Jackson.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edith M. Bowling Jackson; two sons, Michael Dean Jackson and wife, Huetta, James Allen Taylor and wife, Wendy; four daughters, Brenda Gayle Lewis and husband, Charlie, Diane Martin and husband, Ed, Lynda Collins and husband, Glenn, Bobbi Atkinson and husband, Mark; four grandchildren, Joshua Glenn Collins, Lauren Dean Jackson, Joni Thompson, Johnny Taylor; two great-grandchildren, Garrett and Keelan; seven brothers, two sisters, and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will be present to receive friends 10- 11 AM Tuesday at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 3500 Edwards Mill Road, Raleigh, NC 27612, where funeral services will follow at 11 AM.
