Mrs. Gaynelle Scotton Glass, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born in Siler City, NC, former resident of Wilmington, and longtime resident of Raleigh, Gaynelle was born on September 23, 1940, to the late Heck and Mattie Scotton. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 61 years, Rev. Dr. J. Conrad Glass, Jr.
Gaynelle is survived by her children; son, Bill Glass and Vicki Whitlock of Raleigh; son, Scott Glass and wife Bonnie of Greenville, NC; and her grandchildren, Katie and Sam Glass.
Gaynelle was a proud graduate of Greensboro College. After earning her teaching license, she taught music, spending most of her career at Fox Road Elementary School. For years, she also shared her musical talents as the beloved organist and choir director at St. James United Methodist Church and as interim music director at Edenton St. UMC. She accompanied performances at the Raleigh Little Theater, Memorial Auditorium, and for numerous county-wide Pieces of Gold showcases for Wake County Public Schools. Forever humble about her musical ability, she never sought accolades for the gifts God had given her.
Gaynelle accomplished much in her career but was most proud of her family. A devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, she found her greatest joy in these relationships. She was a generous servant leader whose ability to listen benefitted many. Her gifts of connecting with and caring for people drew others to her. She loved God, her many friends, church families at St. James and Edenton Street, Camp Don Lee, where she met Conrad, and the N.C. State Wolfpack. Married at 20 and a mom at 22, she was fiercely loyal, and although incredibly independent, cherished most her time with family and friends. She was deeply loved and will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Don Lee, 315 Camp Don Lee Rd., Arapahoe, NC 28510, or Edenton Street United Methodist Church.
A service to honor and celebrate Gaynelle's life will be conducted at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, date and time to be determined.
Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh, is serving the Glass family.
